Agentic Commerce Is Early. The Readiness Work Is Not.

Agentic commerce is early. Getting your product data ready isn't optional.

AI shopping is moving from “help me decide” toward “help me compare” and, in some experiences, toward transaction support. The exact winners, protocols, and interfaces will change. That is why brands should resist building a strategy around one headline or one platform. Instead, prepare the information and commerce infrastructure that makes the brand usable by any high-intent discovery layer.

Start with product truth

Agents cannot recommend what they cannot understand. Product titles, descriptions, variants, availability, price, shipping, returns, warranty, compatibility, dimensions, ingredients, materials, and care information should be complete and consistent. If the product page says one thing and the feed says another, you create uncertainty exactly where automated systems are trying to compare options.

Build feeds like a distribution channel

Merchant feeds used to feel like plumbing for Shopping ads. They are becoming broader distribution infrastructure. Keep feed attributes clean, map variants correctly, maintain stable identifiers, and treat imagery and taxonomy as strategic inputs. The same discipline that improves Shopping performance also improves readiness for conversational product discovery.

Make policies machine-readable and customer-readable

Shipping speed, return windows, subscription terms, warranty, and customer support can become recommendation criteria. Hide them behind vague language and both humans and machines have less confidence. Clear policy pages and structured commerce information are conversion assets.

Create comparison content that is actually fair

Founders often avoid comparisons because they do not want to mention competitors. That leaves the comparison narrative to everyone else. Thoughtful “who this is for / who this is not for” content can be more persuasive than a chest-thumping feature chart. It also gives answer engines structured context for tradeoffs.

Protect the brand layer

A future where agents intermediate more shopping makes brand distinctiveness more important, not less. If every product is reduced to price, features, and star ratings, the easiest option is the one with the lowest friction. Distinctive brand meaning, trusted expertise, community, design, and product innovation create reasons that survive a comparison table.

Do not overbuild the future

You do not need a 12-month “agentic commerce transformation” program because a new protocol launched. You do need clean product data, strong structured markup, high-quality feeds, clear policies, helpful content, reliable inventory, and a measurement layer that can adapt as new referral sources emerge. Those investments pay off in current search and commerce today.

The smart posture is readiness without theater: build the foundation, watch behavior, test distribution, and move faster when the channel earns the right to matter.
